Scottish Area Team Championships 2018

Winners for the 1st time - Perth & Kinross

This is just such a fantastic honour to be writing this match report from the 2018 Scottish Boys Area Team Championships which Perth & Kinross won for the 1st time in their long history.

The event was held at Eastwood Golf Club in Renfrewshire and featured all 16 Area's from across Scotland.  The conditions were vey tricky because of the warm, damp air and the thousands (if not millions) of midges!

P&K were represented by Gregor Graham (Blairgowrie), Cormac Sharpe (Blairgowrie), Fraser Matthews (Blairgowrie) & Alex Simpson (Strathmore).  The team was managed by Rodney Neil and Stuart Graham.

The morning foursomes is normally a very tricky format and we have struggled in the past - however, the "pizza plan" was put in place following the practice round to ensure that the guys did not try to chase scores - they had to manage a course which was tricky and quite awkward.

Both pairings shot 1 over par 71's - which was the best combined foursomes score of 142 - with many of the teams playing their way out of contention before the singles were even underway.  Gregor & Cormac then Fraser & Alex both produced some flawless golf and they stuck rigidly to the game plan set by Stuart and Rodney.  Finally, P&K had something to play for in the singles.

Gregor led the way in the singles completing his round in level par 70, with Cormac following close after on 1 over.  Fraser and then Alex both finished on +5 so we were leaders in the clubhouse with a combined Team Total of 358.  The format is that both morning foursomes scores are added to 3 out of 4 best singles scores.

The team and supporters then had a long and anxious wait - because the other teams in contention were only just starting their rounds when we were finishing ours.  We all grabbed some food and most headed back out to watch the action and hope that we had done enough.

Unfortunately, one of our closest rivals - Ayrshire - were out in the last groupings so it made the wait almost unbearable.  However, it became clear that our boys had done enough when the Ayrshire support team came over to congratulate us....but still not official until all cards were confirmed.

The presentation of Prizes was held in the clubhouse with the Eastwood Club Captain doing the honours.

Finally, our team had their hands on the Trophy & their medals.  Team Manager Rodney thanked everyone that made the event happen and paid tribute to the 4 P&K Boys who made history today - Scottish Boys Area Team Champions......!!!!

It is with much regret that Perth & Kinross County Golf Union must put everything on "hold" in line with current Government & Scottish Golf advice and guidelines.

The Executive Team will have regular discussions to constantly review this situation and will keep the Website and Facebook page updated as quickly as possible.  We will also take advice as to whether or not we need to "furlough" the Secretary position at this time and will advise accordingly in due course.

We are all members of Clubs within P&K and fully understand just how difficult the current situation is for members but also for all our staff and volunteers.

In terms of timelines - we will cancel everything planned with immediate effect (25th March) up to the end of April.

Our Champion of Champions event scheduled for 3rd May is still "on" - but this again will be subject to regular review along with all our other events, team matches, coaching etc.

We hope that you will understand our actions and be re-assured by the positon we have taken to ensure the safety of everyone connected with our Clubs throughout Perth & Kinross.
